My dog was diagnosed by the vet over the summer with having sarcoptic
mange (the type that burrows under the skin to lay eggs). The vet told my
parents and I that the mites CAN irritate humans, but cannot complete their
life cycle and die. This was in August...my dog STILL has the mange and now
I am starting to itch like crazy. My parents say it's psychological from
thinking about it too much, but I know it's not. I know that sarcoptic mange
is microscopic, so I didn't bother inspecting myself (since my dog has no
*visible* parasites either). I was wondering if anyone could offer me ANY
advice on sarcoptic mange? Im starting to wonder if it's another type of
mange my dog has, because her Revolution (that's the name of the drug)
treatments don't seem to be working. Could it be another type?
yes, humans can be infected with a version of mange. You should
consult a doctor. And discuss with them about your dog as well.
Another concern. My gerbil tank is at low ground level, *next* to my
dog's sleeping area. Im worried that the gerbils may have it. They are not
excessively itchy, but are there any symptoms I should look for? Also, I
have geckos on the top part of the stand above the gerbils. Can this form of
mange attack reptiles as well?
Scabbing on the skin, lumps that look like puffed out scabs. Hair
loss. I do not know about reptiles.
If your doctor confirms that you have the mange, then go back to
your vet and carefully explain that the dog has NOT seemed to
improve, AND the humans in the family (i.e., you) have it also...
a change of treatment sounds like it is in order for the dog. The
doctor or the vet should be able to advise you as well, on what
to do to kill any in the environment (the dog bed, your bed, etc).
Please help,
