>1) What about alfalfa straw?

Alfalfa is usually very well received. :) It is not 'straw' but hay....
[not the stalks of edible grains, but dried feed plant, in the
same category as grasses]

>2) Is that bad for hammies and gerbies?

No, it does not have the fibrous tendencies of a lot
of other bedding. They seem to love munching on it.

>3) Does this bring in parasites?

It might. [veteran of making lots of alfalfa hay....
trust me this stuff has stuff in it ....]

The packaged stuff in the pet store is pretty 'wildlife free'.
If you're getting it off the bale, doublecheck for mustiness,
spiders, and other bugs.

>4) How deep do gerbils and hamsters like there bedding.

I give two inches. They pile it up as they choose.
