Pine bedding, like all bedding, covers the entire floor of the cage and the
gerbils are always standing in it. Since gerbils have such short legs, their
nose is always close to the bedding causing them to be constantly breathing
the odors given off by the bedding. The odors or fumes given off by Pine
(also Cedar) is toxic.
Toys made from Pine are ok since the gerbil isn't in constant contact with
the wood like they are with Pine bedding.
