Remove the Carefresh bedding. I have found that most of my gerbils are
allergic to paper products. It seems to irritate their noses, causing
them to constantly scurb their noses. This results in swelling, loss of
hair, and redness on the muzzel. I have read, on the list, that
the "blood" is actually mucus discharge. I tend to beleive this.
Clean the nose with a soft damp cloth and apply Neosporin or Basitrason.
Once the irritant is removed from the cages, the chapped noses will go
back to normal in short order.
