Just to update everyone on what happened with my first fostering situation:
I had my first *oops* litter. I had a deh female in with three males (I
thought they were all males) in a tank of pups I couldn't place (because I
keep all pups I can't place). She had a litter of 6, and I found them when
they were just born. I watched for 1/2 day, and she seemed to be neglecting
the pups, so I took the three males out and put them in their own tank. By
the end of the day one of the pups had died, the mom was still neglecting,
and I saw NO milk in any of the others tummies. So I decided to go ahead
and foster the 5 to my other siamese mother who had just had 7 (her third
litter).
Well, it's been 5 days since then and I only lost one more of the fostered
litter. So now the siamese mom has 11 remaining and is doing great! She
accepted the new litter as her own immediately, dad too! He started
grooming them from the start. They all are getting big, and look like
they'll all survive.
Happy Holidays!

Unless the mother is older (like 8 months or more) AND has
had more than one litter; if the litter is eight that is plenty. Unless
the mother had more....
What are the circumstances that you have these six three day
old pups that need fostering?
Mother died? In which case they need to be put with another
female.
Not getting enough milk?
Original litter too big?
Mother turned on litter?
?
In fostering over I prefer to keep females between six and
eight pups unless she's older and experienced, then I
don't like more than 10. (which is very rare....)
It seems the larger the litter size, the more likely that any
that fall behind in growth rapidly lose out.
