H'lo Amber. ^.^
<< I don't know if I told all of you that I think my latest pair is a
male-female pair (do you remember me saying that I couldn't tell?
hehe)...but anyway, I believe they are! In fact, I'm about 99.9% positive!
No, I AM positive! Totally! *giggles* Okay, off the subject. >>
First off: I'm sending this e-mail to both the list and your personal
address because of the bit you mentioned at the bottom, about not getting
certain mails. You may receive it twice, but that's better than not at all.
-.o Congrats on your gerbs, btw.
<< I also think (after getting some help from a few of you--THANK YOU!), that
both of them are argente pied, or argente spot maybe? Can someone explain
to me the difference between pied and spotted? >>
Whew, here we go. The many colors of 'yellow'..>.< If the gerbil has
a white belly, then you can rule out the possibility of red fox, since it's
self-colored. However, there are many other possibilites. You say
'argente'.. but there is argente golden *and* argente cream, with a very
slight difference and can sometimes be extremely hard to tell between the two
unless you placed one next to the other. There's also yellow fox, a more
bold 'orange' color rather than the argente's. Have you tried the Gerbils
Color Palette? It's very helpful in trying to decipher yer gerbie's color..
here's the address of the page:
http://home.wtal.de/ehr/gerbils/colors.htm
Julian has an excellent page that will help you tell between Pied or Patched,
and that is located here:
http://www.rodent.demon.co.uk/gerbils/pied.htm
<< At any rate, assuming I'm right and they're male and female, I was
wondering if spotted gerbs produce colors OTHER than their own. I know, I
know, dumb question, but what can I say? >>
It doesn't matter if they're spotted, it all has to do with the
wonders of genetics. ^.^ You can pair up the most beautifull colored gerbils
and get all agouti in their litters.. do you happen to know the genes of your
gerbils? Unlike non-spotted gerbs, however, you will have pups with spots in
your litters. If they're both spotted (or pied.. whichever you decide. -.o),
then the two will produce smaller litters do to a gene called 'homozygous
lethal.' Alright.. example time. I was always bad at these.. hehe.
Assuming both gerbs have some sort of spots on them.. the ending to
their genetic makeup would read "Spsp" for each of them. If one was to
conduct a punnett square crossing the Spsp and the other Spsp genes to see
the percentage outcomes of the litters, you would find that %50 would be
spotted (Spsp), %25 would be un-spotted (spsp), and the remaining %25 would
be un-born (SpSp) and absorbed back into the mother's womb, they will not
come out stillborn. It's the simple fact that SpSp gerbils do not exist,
therefore cannot be born. If I'm wrong here guys, let me know.. I'm only
babbling about what I remember from a few years back. O.o (Btw, Spsp
represents a spotted gerbil, whereas 'spsp' represents a non-spotted gerbil..
so in your case, if both were spotted, you would cross Spsp and Spsp).
<< This is my first time with breeding gerbils! ;o) Actually, Donna
(the ABC Gerbils gal ;) has a picture on her site with a gerbil in it that
looks exactly like my two, except mine have ruby eyes, and I can't tell if
the one in this piccy has black or ruby. Hope you don't mind me putting a
link to that picture, Donna! I just need to use it as a visual aid because
the pictures I took were horrible! >>
Hehe, I'm sure she doesn't mind.. If your gerbs look like the one in
this picture, then they're most likely Yellow fox. To tell between a yellow
fox and an argente, look at where the white line of the belly extend to. If
the white appears to rise up over the eye, then you've got a yellow fox. If
it stays below and only covers the main stomach area, then it's an argente.
Well.. that's how I always used to be able to tell, anyway. (: Anyone else
have a different method..?
<< The gerbil in the center looks like my two. Anyway, I think that's it for
now! Well, except for the fact that I'm STILL confused about why I'm not
getting all the emails sent to the list...I know someone gave a suggestion
as to why I wasn't seeing all of them, but I never even got the "G: Mystery
color ??" email, and it was sent to the list address! That's happened MANY
times already...I wonder if it would work to subscribe with a different
address? It's really bugging me that only a few emails are going through!!!
If anyone can help, I'll be grateful! ;) And anyone who answers my silly
color question will have a place in my heart, too! ;oD
~*~Amber~*~
and Hamlet and Ophelia, the subjects of this email. ;) >>
You could always try unsubcribing and resubscribing, no need to use a
different address. If the problem persists, .. I can't help ya'. *wink*
Anyhu.. that's it from my end. Hope that helped.. I rarely have time anymore
to answers people's questions.. so consider yourself lucky. lol, j/k.
