jumping gerbils?

Hi all,     With all this talk about jumping I have a question. The other day I was sitting at the computer typing and Perseus (my male Burmese) started freaking out. He just started jumping straight up and slamming into the top of the cage, over and over. I went over and took the top of cuz I was afraid he was going to hurt him self. Well as soon as i did that he stopped, but when I put it back on he started again. he did it about 3 more times and than just stopped. before that I had never seen any of my gerbils jump. I don't mean like when they get scared and jump I am talking really jump. What was he doing? Thanx for any help.
