Introducing question between two males!

I have a male gerbil about a year old that is living with his wife.  I have
another male that is all alone that used to have a wife about 2 1/2-3 months
ago.  I am wondering if it is too late for me to introduce a male in with the
lonely male, would they kill each other no matter what?  Or is there a chance
I can do this without fighting (since they are males).  I am separating my
pairs, but I don't want to have two lonely males.
