I know that it is usually recommended that once a
mating pair is put together they should stay together.
And I agree that is the best way to go.

However, I'm planning on separating my pairs after
their second litters, letting each parent stay with
one of their children (of the same sex of course). I
don't want to just breed indiscriminately, that would
be irresponsible. I also know I can't find homes for
40+ gerbils either. If at some point I decide to do
some serious breeding, I would want to know that I can
find homes for or take care of the babies that result.

I know there's a question in here somewhere. oh yes!
:)

Is there anything wrong with separating a pair after
their second litter? I mean to wait until the second
litter is born so that I know the babies from the
first litter are old enough to be paired with momma or
daddy when they're between 5-8 weeks old. and I do
understand that the way gerbies work, there may be a
thrid litter. I am prepared for that eventuality as
well. I just want to be sure that the gerbils will be
okay. I have heard of some people doing this, just
asking for some opinions.

Thanks.
Renee

ps. are silver nutmegs rare?
