I hang the bottle on the *outside* of the tank, with only the tip poking in.
This way, the damage they can inflict on it is minimal, and they can't climb
it to escape. Of course, it's only possible with a wire cage or a plastic
tank (I have a plastic one, and I used a hot object to make a hole for the
bottle tip) . Usually it's not hard to hang it somehow on the outside (I
made another hole at the top of the tank and tied a string to it and to the
bottle to hold it. But you can make other supports as well - remember, when
it's on the outside, it doesn't have to be as firm as on the inside, because
the gerbils will not try to topple and eat it...).
