Hi, list...

As I was making my rounds to feed animals earlier, I noticed chubby ol' Winston just laying in the big tank by himself.  I put a few handfuls of food in there and watched as his cagemates ran to gather their favorite bits...but instead of joining them, Winston barely moved.  That in itself was odd.  Usually, as soon as he hears the lid come off and food start to hit the bedding, he's frantically rummaging for a tasty morsel.  I thought maybe he was merely sleepy and had eaten earlier.  I dropped a few pieces on his back to get his attention.  He didn't stir.  I got scared.  I reached in, picked him up, and instead of taking a few seconds to wake up and try to get away (he never liked being picked up much), he didn't react.  I knew something was wrong.  He was old and a bit obese, so I figured his time was near about a month or two ago.  That feeling built up and just the other day I made the comment that I didn't think we had much time with Winston left.  I didn't know how right I was.  He passed away less than an hour ago.  My husband and I found a box that was perfect for him...made him a nest...nice and fluffy...  I made sure to give him lots of food to choose from and plenty of sunflower seeds.  He always loved them.  We told him to say hi to Sneezer and Fido, to tell them we love them and we're thinking about them.  He'll tell them.  And he knows we feel the same way about him.  He was put to rest next to Sneezer... I miss him so much.  But Winston had a good life.  He had lots of gerbil buddies, tubes and toilet paper to chew up, and more food than he knew what to do with.  Rest in peace, Winston.  You're already missed and we'll never stop loving you.
