BTW  Gerbils are not preyed on by cats in the wild and proximity to a cat

gerbils end up as cat food because they do not have this fear.

I used to worry about my gerbils being bothered by my cats, but they don't
seem to worry in the least.  Even when my cat tried to bite Viola's tail
(well, actually, he did bite her tail, but I got him off in time so he just
ended up with a mouthful of fur), she didn't really seem put off.
