Thank you so much to everyone for your replies.

My two gerbils are named shorty and snoopy, and snoopy was the one who died. It was
really sad that Snoopy passed away so unexpectedly. Shorty is exactly one year old,
so that will probably make an introduction more complicated. Also, I dont know if I
will be able to find another gerbil that I could take back if it didnt work out, and I
dont know if I have the time to devote to an introduction.

I have had single gerbils before, but these were my first pair. They were so sweet to
each other and always did everything side by side. As Snoopy was sick and dying,
Shorty would come tap her and try to get her to play, and after she died Shorty was
laying on her (heartbreaking!). There is no way to know what a gerbil is feeling, but
Shorty seems to be acting pretty normal now. I am so sad about Snoopy's death, but I
dont know if I am just projecting my emotions onto her. If I did wait a year to get
another one or didn't get another one at all, how miserable would shorty's life be?
Would it be cruel of me to make her live alone?
