It all depends on individual tastes. Mice and rats DO make great pets ... as
well as many of the other critters that people have as pets. I've had
gerbils, rats, mice, a guinea pig, and hamsters (as well as parakeets and a
cockatiel) and each is different. My sister had hamsters and liked them
better than gerbils ... I like gerbils MUCH better than hamsters.
