Not too long ago someone asked about introducing a pup to a gerbil pair. I wanted to pass on my recent experience. I have 4 month old male pair that I've been trying to place. Someone was interested in my setting up a boy tank for her. I decided to try adding to this pair a six week old boy pup. I first put the pup in a fresh tank. Wearing gloves I put in the non-dominate adult. The pup was interested in the adult, he was interested in exploring the tank. Then he started to groom the pup. I removed that adult and put in the dominate male. He too right away was interested in and nice to the pup. I added in both males and if they gave the pup too much attention, removed one for a few minutes. They all got along so great, that I added in the pups brother. Again with one male at a time. They where gerbil piling within a couple of hours. Now days later the four are very nicely clanned. On the other hand, I tried to pair a 7 week girl and 5 week old boy for someone (piece of cake, right?) I ended up having to place them in a split cage setup and now 10 days later, they are still not together. My experiences are that some gerbils get along great and right away. Others just don't.
