Sounds like it could be a scent gland tumor to me.  I'd take him to a vet
experienced with small animals.  It may need to be removed.  Sometimes they'll
gnaw at a tumor and wind up with an infection.

How ironic!  I am hoping to start breeding again eventually (I'm in Scottsdale,
AZ) but right now have only adults that I've got too attached to!  :)  The
American Gerbil Society president, however, lives in Phoenix and as far as I know
she's still breeding.  Amy Hicks, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]  She could
probably tell you what vet to go to as well.  Though if you don't mind driving to
Scottsdale I can certainly recommend mine!  :)
