Hello All.
I am new to the list and for that matter I am new to gerbils. Anyway, I will
get to the point. I brought home two little ones from a breeder and put them
into a 20 gallon aquarium. I have it about a third of the way filled with
aspen with tissue tossed in for them to decorate with and what not. They do
appear friendly but it takes a bit of coaxing to get them to come out for a
treat or to be held. My question(s) is should I remove all the excess aspen
until they get to know me and won't dart underground each time I approach
their home? I mean if they can dart away each time they will never get to
know me and therefore remain a little timid or wild. What do the rest of you
do? Should there be a time of adjustment before you load up the tank with all
the trappings?
Like I said they do appear to be friendly and their curiosity usually brings
them to the top but still they try to bolt when I pick them up or try to pet
them. I suppose I am used to rats which bolt for the cage door when I open it.
I would appreciate any tips or advice on getting these two acclimated to
their new home and human roommates.
Joe
