If you don't like the topic, don't read it.

I think debates like this are a very important way information about care
and breeding can be shared.

Perhaps now people who wouldn't have checked a shelter for a gerbil will do
so.

This is no different than the ongoing debate about the ethics of shipping
small animals that frequently comes up. It's all part of the exchange of
ideas and opinions that goes on because we want the best possible care and
environment for our gerbils and other pets.
