Well, I use Biocatalet, a paper-based cat litter that is also recommended
for rodents. It is excellent. Very absorbent of smells - not a problem
with gerbils, but significant with my rats. It is also far less dustier
than wood chips. The only problem is the price, about 3 times that of
woodchips.
However, I did once try another supermarket own brand paper-based cat
litter. According to the packet this was also suitable for rodents, but I
would never use it again. It seemed to disintegrate very easily and was
highly perfumed. So I suppose you just have to find the right brand.
Biocatalet is available in the UK. Carefresh seems to be the equivalent in
the US.
Cheers
