It is dangerous storing ether, being very flammable. It is also highly
irritant to the linings of the lungs. This is especially true with
rodents. It is not approved for use on laboratory animals for these
reasons.

On the other hand, although not ideal, it is better than most of the
alternatives available to ordinary pet keepers.

On the whole I would always recommend a vet for euthanasia except where
the animal is in severe pain or other extreme circumstances that
something needs to be done immediately.
