I hate to respond to this discussion because it's a bit morbid to be
discussing how to kill your gerbils.

But, here is how my mother-in-law used to kill ill rodents when my husband
was a child. She would but the animal in a small, enclosed container and
hold that up to the tailpipe of an idling car. Of course, the rodent would
then die of carbon monoxide poisoning.

I don't know if that method is very humane or how long it takes. I have
never tried it. I don't recommend it. That's just the facts as my husband
presented them to me as we were discussing gerbil euthanasia a couple weeks
ago.

I once read an article on Squeak the online magazine for rats (which doesn't
exist anymore, I think) which described another home method of rat
euthansia. Either it recommended chloroform or a tank of carbon dioxide. I
can't remember the details. If you can, go searching the internet.

Again, I don't recommend CO poisoning as the humane method of killing
gerbils. I am just presenting the information for discussion.
