It is much more effective to dose the antibiotics directly. If the vet
thinks there is a need for a course of antibiotics to prevent infection, I
would suggest trimethoprim sulfa. There is a pediatric suspension and
animals generally love the taste. He/she can figure out the appropriate
dose given the gerbil's weight. Get a few 1cc syringes without the needles
to dose and give the meds.
