Julian once described the way that gerbils categorize
us is as "territory" (hope I'm not mis-quoting)!
The nice thing about that is that while they forget
their gerbil buddies in 24-48 hours of absence they
have a very long memory for territory and so know us
for weeks (or longer absenses)
