I have

Only seen prairie dogs once. Larger gerbil species such as Great Gerbils
ands Fat Sand Rats are the only things anywhere near big enough. Shaw's
Jirds, the largest Jird, is significantly smaller than an adult Rattus
norvegicus.

Did you see a tail, and if so, how long was it and did it have a tuft.
If so, what did the tuft look like?

I have pictures of FSR and Great Gerbils taken in the wild on my species
pages. When alert their ears pop up and they look much more "gerbil"

FSR are used in diabetes research in the US - so my money is on that.
When suffering type II diabetes FSR can get very big as shown in the
pictures.


(BTW - FSR get diabetes based on a diet that is not very low in sugar -
they are used to research how humans can avoid Type II diabetes that
commonly  affects middle aged humans that are overweight.)
