filing nails

Hello,

I was wondering if gerbils needed to have their nails
clipped -- if that would ever be a problem?

I was thinking of putting a small paving stone/brick
type of thing underneath the water bottle to catch
drips and also "file" the nails.

Would that do any harm to their paws?
