Yes, they sometimes do.

If you didn't do the whole cage bottom like that.
It should help...I just use a playbox with sandpaper
on the sides (220 grit) and a couple of pieces of
2x4 with sandpaper wrapped around them for the
gerbil to crawl on when playing.
