>I asked at the pet stores last weekend, and the people said not to give
gerbils the chinchilla baths because the dust can cause problems. They said
to stick with kitty litter, which is what I've been using as their little
toilet since day one. They've been using it to roll around in and then do
poopies in. Yet it sounds like many people ARE giving them the dust bath.
Which is the better choice?

Chinchilla dust is fine as long as you don't have a gerbil with an
upper respiratory problem already...if they are being treated for
clicking and wheezing, don't give them any.

Just put the dish in for twenty minutes or so then remove it. Else
they will use it for a toilet. I usually give it right before I start
bedding changing/cage cleaning, so I can clean up after them.

Kitty litter, beware of anything that clumps. If it will dissolve if
soaked for 20 minutes in water, you can use it (slumps to mud,
or otherwise dissolves). Otherwise, if they ingest it it can possibly
clump and kill them by causing an intestinal obstruction.
