I change the water every day. It tastes better fresh if nothing else!
Also it stops algal growth on the bottle. Each day i rinse the bottle out
before refilling. About once every 2-3 weeks, I wash the bottle in washing
up liquid and rinse very thoroughly. London tap water is hard and contains
lots of calcium carbonate. If bottles aren't washed regularly, you can also
get "fur" clogging up the spouts.

Why? Is your tap water not safe for you to drink. If it is, then there
should be no problem for your gerbils

Cheers
