baby gerbil question

When do baby gerbils start to get weaned by their mother? Do they start to chew on cardboard or anything such as that before they even have their eyes open? We have been catching some of the babies chewing on the things we put in the cage for the parents and I was just wondering if it is a learned thing or is it instinctive? Heather
