I'm not sure exactly when they start to get weaned, but it seems to be right
about the time they begin to open their eyes. Maybe 17 days? It's been
awhile since I had pups around here, I'm starting to forget.
I've seen some as young as 10 days try to nibble on things whether it's
food, bedding or a piece of cardboard. Just like a baby, everything goes
into their mouths.

Subject: baby gerbil question
When do baby gerbils start to get weaned by their mother? Do they start to
chew on cardboard or anything such as that before they even have their eyes
open? We have been catching some of the babies chewing on the things we put
in the cage for the parents and I was just wondering if it is a learned
thing or is it instinctive?
