Either he rubbed it on something in the cage, or he is having an
allergic reaction to the bedding.
Gerbil mucus is bright red and looks like blood oftentimes.
What sort of bedding do you use, what sort of things are in
the cage or tank and what sort of cage or tank do you keep
them in?
