Hi everyone,

I'm beginning to think that my Poke-poke is getting fat. He seemed a little plumper
than he was when I returned from holidays, and now all I keep thinking first is
"you're fat" when I look at him.

I haven't given him any fatty food, just the regular seed mix (Hagen) minus all the
sunflower seeds, and the nutri-blocks ("lab blocks"). They sometimes do eat these.
And I only leave enough in the cage to last from one feeding time to the next (one
day). For treats, I give carrots, apples, plain shredded wheat/100% whole wheat
bread, broccoli, and occasional sunflower seeds and fat-free vanilla yoghurt. Not all
at the same time, of course. I give one type of treat each night. Maybe that's too
much? But these seem to be such healthy food.

I also let them out to their playground nearly every night for at least an hour.

What makes a gerbil get fat? Once fat, how can they be reduced back to normal? How
can you tell a gerbil is normal weight without actually weighing him? What does it
look like? What does a fat one look like?

Thanks,

Amy
