It's possible, though not too common, they may be allergic to aspen. It's a
pretty good bedding for gerbils. Don't be too quick to switch bedding yet.
Check the tank to be sure it has thoroughly rinsed with Very hot water to
remove all possible residue from cleaning agents.
The thing to watch for is if the gerbils are constantly rubbing their nose.
If so, then something in the tank really is bothering them. Be observant for
swelling and hair loss in the muzzle area. If this occurs, apply a thin
coating of Neosporin, a pain killer/antibiotic, to the area. This will cut
down on their tendency to rub an chaff the area as well as promote healing.
