On the subject of using totes and storage containers
for small animals....

I tried this.

Just about everything on the market, sterilite and
rubbermaid being the two lead contenders, some
opaque, some almost clear.

Whether it be gerbil or hamster, pretty soon
somebody would figure out how to dig or otherwise
get a tooth on the plastic, and once they start gnawing
they are out!

They are also somewhat brittle and will split when
you don't expect it....and they are harder to clean.

As someone mentioned, the Kritter Keepers, in
JUMBO size (about $20 at PetCo) are about the
same footprint as a 10 gallon aquarium and are
easier to care for. Just make sure your gerbils
can't jump up on top of a waterbottle or hanging
wheel and chew at the snap on lid.

They seem a little small for a syrian hamster
with a litter, or a pair of gerbils with a litter,
but are my default as escape-resistant housing.

Aquariums actually work the best for gerbils,
as being easier to clean and harder to scratch
or chew out of.
