I've got two gerbils that are both aprox. 4 years old with a scent gland
tumor at the moment and visited the vet yesterday with them. She
specialises in rodents and told me that especially old male gerbils that
have been inbred are liable to get these problems... And I think that could
be true because I bought both these gerbs at pet shops. The gerbs (except
one) I had from a breeder died from other things.

Greetings, Marielle

Ps I don't think I can fill in the gerbil longevity survey because I'm from
Holland and we don't have products like care free or aspen. But all my
gerbils seem to reach the age of three to four, live on a mixture of
woodchips and hay, are kept in a very large glass tank (70 or 90*50*50cms)
filled till 30cms with the mentoined mixture; are given various foods, have
large carton tubes, a ball and a sandbath in their homes; have one tank
mate, and don't breed.
