have you tried thrift stores or secondhand stores?
we've gotten 10gal tanks from $2-$6 (US dollars), some with accessories
we've gotten really big tanks for really cheap because they had cracks (some had cracks you'd never notice but are cheap because ppl think no one wants a leaky fish tank!)
if you do find one at a thrift store-be careful that it does not have too much water damage
there are deposits left like ring around the tub and sometimes the deposits do not come off (at least not with any of the stuff we've tried)
some are in excellent condition-you'd never know they were used save the "garage dust" and cobwebs
you can also run across retiring breeders-we have a friend who used to breed and she gave us tons of stuff
try yahoo classifieds under fish or small animal supplies
aol classifieds may have some too
lots of other search engines have classified sections like that (maybe dogpile, lycos?)
