You can have up to three females in one tank. No more,
though three risks an eventual battle of wills between
two of the females, sometimes they can live in
harmony.

Three males is the best bet. Males tend to get along
better than females.

Most gerbil care books have much misinformation. Most
breeders are accurate. Many pet sotores are guilty of
mis-sexing a gerbil and many new pet owners wind up
with pups that way. Try and learn to sex them yourself
or learn as much as you can about it, before going to
a pet store.
