If one clan of gerbil runs the wheel rubbing their scent gland all over it then a different clan runs the wheel the scent of "foreign" gerbil will coat the second clan. This can lead to a violent outbreak of fighting and death. I don't know what gerbils would do if one of their own was coated with hamster smell.
