I did some additional tests, and it seems get_iplayer cannot get
any data from the web.
When I try: ./get_iplayer --conditions I expect to see the
GPL-conditions, but all I get is:

What am I missing?
You weren't doing your tests around this (UK) time were you?:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12904586 (The whole of the BBC web
site including iPlayer was down for around an hour between 11 and 12pm
last night due to a network failure.)
