Ah, you touched on the catch. Recording to VHS nearly most of the time
was analogue. Duplicating a tape was subject to duplication failures.
Unless you have a TV with hacked HDMI ports you cannot record off of
HDMI. You are limited to using
device such as EyeTV to capture the programme. If you are watching on
the Web you have to screen scrape with somethiing like iShowU HD.
Screen scraping is subject to video-audio getting out of sync. Screen
Scraping a smaller area of the screen results in improved results but
pixelation occurs when viewed at higher resolutions.

get_iplayer, bypasses all of that and is grabbing a digital copy of
the BBC content. there is a fundamental difference.
