I've just grown used to it costing me about $500 a year

Kind of depressing...

True, but if you can write it off as an expense of doing business, $500 isn't all that bad.

It's not bad if you can use it :)
I've had one client project in 2005/2006 in the past two years
Everyone else is still using 5.5.5 because of bugs that affect their ability to move their projects up to the latest version

But, 2006r5 looks promising

Keeping things in perspective, 5.0 to 5.5.5 was the same.

It was quite a bit less expensive at the time and the upgrade came fairly quickly. I know. I bought them.
5.1 and 5.2 came out promptly and 5.5 did as well

I think we will be well into Rb 2007 before the equivalent resolution of problems will happen. I don't fault RS for all of this as Apple really threw everybody for a loop when they switched to Intel chips.

The chip change is one thing and I'm sure it ended up taking resources that could have been used to work on other things. However, Apple had to do something as IBM and Motorola were slowly killing them with a lack of progress in the Power series of chips suitable for desktops and laptops.

I must agree, however, that 5.5.5 is probably the most stable version released so far by REAL Software. They will eventually match and exceed it though.

It is/was
At one time Geoff promised it would be "rock solid" or something to that effect and it did get there.

There are lots of nice additions to the language that make me want to use the newer versions full time but there are things holding that back for my clients and their projects.

Some projects are so huge they don't compile (http:// www.realsoftware.com/feedback/viewreport.php?reportid=dfrlszks) so that one is a show stopper til it's addressed

Others are related to productivity like being able to alter values in the debugger as the app runs (http://www.realsoftware.com/feedback/ viewreport.php?reportid=yiwdfrbo) Not being able to do that anymore does slow down debugging efforts as you either have to code in alternate values and rerun to test code paths or some other scheme The new IDE on dual monitors is not as nice to use as the old 5.5 style was but that's a matter of personal preference
I don't like the new IDE on dual monitors as much as the old one

Some has to do with plugins that REAL supplies not being UB and no indications of whether they will be (http://www.realsoftware.com/ feedback/viewreport.php?reportid=pycixjiv) For now we're using one I wrote in pure RB code but we have to alter code because there's no way to make a subclass of RecordSet or any other Database API class and have it work properly unless you build a plugin.

Most are not show stoppers in and of themselves (except one) but they all add up.

That said, new version are getting better so maybe I'll use them full time one day :)
