As I implied, I have gforth64-0.7.9_20150825.exe installed, but are you saying
that I should build and install this?

https://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/forth/gforth/Snapshots/gforth64-0.7.9_20150825.exe.s2o

If so, please forgive me, but what do I do with that file?

You can't build a clean git checkout without having Gforth installed. It's ok
to have an older Gforth installed, but the git repository does not contain
automatically created stuff, only sources.

If you want to build from scratch, get a snapshot, build and install it. You
can then update to git head, and build from that.
