Are you using fbcon ? If you use a straight console setup, the graphics
hardware gets directly programmed by the X server or SVGAlib or whatever,
and the kernel has no possibility at all to set it back to text mode,
as it has just killed the program that could.

O.K. - that explains it. Yes. Fbcon of course as well fixes the problem.

Yes, as you are using fbcon, which is far better than the normal console
system. Maybe not perfect, but ...
