Thats a bad idea. A patch will be going in to 2.3.X to not allow this.

Sounds like you set a mode the card couldn't handle. Fbdev drivers are yet
their to handle such things.

The X server reset the color map. Vt switching should reset the colormap
to what the other console is using. Sounds like a bug.

Just fbset. Use it to set it to 640x480x8.
