what's the problem with freetype ? It produces glyph pixmaps, either bitmaps
or (anti aliased) pixmaps. You even can draw outlines with it (useful for
larger point sizes). All you need is map it to the screen. Berlin uses this
strategy and we are quite happy with it.

Right, Freetype2 is the next thing to wait for. It's a complete redisign.
Very powerful. It not only supports TrueType (as the 1.x series did) but also
Type1 and OpenType and possibly others.
Freetype 1.3 is the current 'old' API which works well. It should compile on
anything from Unix over windows to Mac.
