That shouldn't be. What driver are you using ? fbcon ? In that case, make
sure you have MagicSysRq compiled in the kernel, that it is enabled
(/proc/sys/kernel/sysrq) and you know how to use it 
(/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt).

Using "SetColorfulPalette" and the usual color conversion routines should do
fine.
