Sure. On the other hand, you wouldn't think of asking the system how much RAM
is available before you allocate memory on the heap. (other than for monitoring
purposes)

In fact, that is precisely what a memory manager is all about: it manages the
mapping between 'virtual memory', and 'physical memory'.
