Running X pointer off of GII?

Hi,
  I'm trying to install linux on a laptop.  For some reason, the built in
nipple-mouse is eratic when combined with a particular X video driver.  

  However, gpm functions flawlessly, leading me to believe that if I could
somehow get some other way of reading the mouse, it would work.  And iirc
gii has some capacity for translating to Xlib events.  

  Soo.... can it be done?  :)
