DIST_SUBDIRS is the solution. Now everything comes into the source
tarball.
But as you said Thayne:

On my machine, libgii's configure says no to vgl, directx, pcjoy and
lk201.
libggi's configure says no to directx, directfb, generic
KGI, glide, lcd823 and vgl, make distcheck doesn't test these targets.
If there is someone out there, whose configure says yes to at least one of
these input-libs/targets, then going ahead with "make distcheck" to see if
that works is very appreciated.
