Thanks for sharing your progress. I will take a look at the patch and links 
you posted and see if that is useful for the Debian package.

Unfortunately, very little.

I have tracked down a GCC bug or two over the years, and even read up on GCC 
internals when I once considered making a GCC front end for a "toy" language 
(I ended up using LLVM), so I only know enough to be mildly dangerous. =)
